Maputo suffers from serious coastal erosion, an endemic problem throughout Mozambique and Africa. One expert estimates in ten to 50 years the beaches in Maputo could completely disappear. American photographer Michael Barrientos has documented the lives of those who use Maputo's beaches over the past 2 years, photographing the physical damage occurring during this short period and highlighting how this area is intertwined in the lives of many social groups. His work is an ethnographical and environmental study of one way climate change has affected Maputo, its coastline and its people.
A erosão costeira é um problema que tem afectado muitos paises no mundo e Moçambique não é excepção. Especialistas em erosão costeira acreditam que as praias Moçambicanas estaram em risco de desaparecer nos próximos 50 anos se a situacão continuar no estado em que se encontra. O fotógrafo Norte Americano Michael Barrientos, tem estado a documentar o dia a dia das comunidades que habitam a zona costeira assim como o desgaste fisico que ocorre ao longo de 18 mese com a finalidade de mostrar como esta area está ligada a vários grupos sociais que nela co-habitam. No seu trabaho, ele faz uma abordagem etnográfica e ambiental com o intuito de mostrar como o efeito das mudanças

About the Photographer
Michael Barrientos is a documentary photographer based in Maputo, Mozambique. In 1993, he began his journalism career in Central California working as a news writer but switched to photography and has worked on newspaper staffs across the United States including the San Antonio Express-News, The Sarasota Herald-Tribune and most recently The New York Times. He was a stringer for the Associated Press covering the U.S./Mexico border in Texas and began his current freelance career in Portugal in 2005. His work has appeared in The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, USA Today, MSNBC and The Independent Magazine. His non-editorial clients range from corporate institutions such as Barclays and Osram to non-profit organizations such as The International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Programs (ICAP), The HALO Trust and Iris Ministries Inc. Barrientos is a graduate of California State University-Fullerton and will finish the Master's Program in documentary photography and photojournalism at London College of Communication in late 2009. Vanishing Coast has been a long-term project for his master's degree.
